Thirukural 664 :
சொல்லுதல் யார்க்கும் எளிய அரியவாம்
சொல்லிய வண்ணம் செயல்
(Solludhal yārkkum eliya ariyavām
Solliya vaṇṇam seyāl)
Speaking is easy for all, but doing exactly as one has spoken is rare.
Classical Interpretation
Words are effortless; action is demanding. While many make promises, only a few possess the discipline and integrity to carry out their words faithfully. True worth lies not in speech but in the steadfastness of fulfilling what one has declared.
Real-Life Application: Dr Jemilah Mahmood – A Life of Action Beyond Words
In Malaysian humanitarian history, few figures embody Thiruvalluvar’s wisdom as profoundly as Dr Jemilah Mahmood. When she founded MERCY Malaysia in 1999, she was not merely expressing concern for global suffering; she was committing herself to act. And she did.

From war zones like Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan, to natural disasters in Aceh, Pakistan, and Nepal, Dr Jemilah consistently placed action above rhetoric. She led medical relief missions into conflict areas where even experienced aid agencies hesitated, proving that compassion has meaning only when it takes form in the field.
Her leadership grew beyond MERCY Malaysia. She later served as Under-Secretary-General for Partnerships at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), one of the highest humanitarian positions in the world. She also became a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, contributing to global research on crisis response.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Jemilah returned to Malaysia as the Special Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Health, guiding national strategy, vaccine communication, and long-term health resilience efforts. At every stage, she demonstrated the truth of this kural: she never said anything she was not prepared to do. Her journey stands as a reminder that real impact comes not from promises but from the courage, discipline, and consistency to fulfil them — no matter how difficult the path.
Final Thought
True leadership lies in action. Dr Jemilah shows that fulfilling our words with courage and consistency is the highest form of integrity.
