Thirukural 423 :

எப்பொருள் யார்யார்வாய்க் கேட்பினும் அப்பொருள்
மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்ப தறிவு.

(Epporul Yaaryaarvaaik Ketpinum Apporul

 Meypporul Kaanba Tharivu)

The mark of wisdom is to discern the truth from whatever source it is heard.

Classical Interpretation

Thiruvalluvar defines the essence of wisdom not by possession of knowledge, but by the ability to recognize truth, even when it arrives from unfamiliar or humble voices.

True intelligence lies in listening without prejudice, observing, analyzing, and accepting facts as they are. Whether in philosophy or science, this timeless Kural celebrates open-mindedness, rational thinking, and humility before truth.

Real-Life Application: Dr. Mazlan Othman – Seeing Beyond Borders

When Dr. Mazlan Othman began her journey as Malaysia’s first astrophysicist, space science seemed like a distant dream for the nation. Yet, she saw no barriers; only possibilities. After earning her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Otago, she returned home to inspire Malaysia’s scientific landscape.

Her work led to the formation of the Malaysian National Space Agency (ANGKASA) and later took her to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), where she became the first Malaysian and first Asian woman to lead the organization.

Dr. Mazlan’s leadership embodies the wisdom of Thirukkural 423. She sought truth and knowledge from all sources, fostering global cooperation beyond nationality, culture, or belief. Her vision showed that science is universal, and that wisdom grows when we learn from every corner of the world.

In a world often divided by pride and perspective, her life teaches that the pursuit of truth unites humanity, just as Thiruvalluvar envisioned more than two thousand years ago.

 Final Thought

True wisdom is seeing truth beyond voices, borders, and pride; a light that guides both science and humanity.
